To be fair, it wasn't the depth of the snow, but the extremely windy conditions. With the drifting, it was basically impossible to keep anything -- rails or roads -- plowed for more than a few minutes.
You forgot to mention that they closed S. Lake Shore Drive for a while, too.
Also, I'd hardly say that commuter rail "collapsed". Metra is just really good about announcing problems, so you can always hear about everything that went wrong.

Thanks for the update Dustin....
Looks like it is still bad out there this morning.
The winter weather has also affected morning commuters. The Chicago Transit Authority has rerouted three bus routes because of the closure of Lake Shore Drive, according to the CTA's Web Site.
The Jackson Park Express (No. 6), Jeffery Express (No. 14) and South Shore Express (No. 26) will be rerouted via Jeffery Boulevard, 67th Street, Stony Island Avenue, 56th Street, Lake Park Avenue, 47th Street, King Drive, Cermak Road and Michigan Avenue before returning to their regular routes, the Web Site stated.
The CTA reminds all customers to allow extra travel time.
Metra is reminding customers that all trains may experience delays of five to 15 minutes because of the winter weather. The Rock Island District Train No. 600 will be delayed 30 to 40 minutes because of a medical emergency, according to Metra's Web Site.
The Milwaukee District West Line train #2201, which departed Chicago at 5:39 a.m., is currently also being delayed in the vicinity of Elmwood Park due to an automobile being stalled on the tracks, according to the Web Site. It is estimated that this train will operate approximately 25 to 30 minutes behind schedule.
