Chicago transit had a brutal Tuesday

Chicago had their first snow of the season on Tuesday and they did not have a good transit day...

The Pink Line ( yes Pink Line) derailed during the morning rush hour
Pink Line service has been restored in both directions between the 54th/Cermak and Pulaski stations. All trains are moving. Service had been interrupted earlier due to an equipment problem.

Thank you for your patience as we worked to correct this problem.
Meanwhile the Blue Line that connects the Loop with O'Hare Field gets hit with this
Due to track work on the Blue Line between Division/Milwaukee and Grand/Milwaukee, a slow zone has been added in both directions through which trains must operate at 6 miles per hour. Please allow for extra travel time.
and then during the evening rush hour
Normal service has now resumed on the Yellow Line. However, we are currently working to restore normal service intervals.

Red Line and Purple Line trains are moving but are currently experiencing service delays. Please allow additional travel time.
buses were not doing any better
Due to the inclement weather, Lake Shore Drive is temporarily closed in both directions between 57th Street and Roosevelt Road. The following buses are being temporarily rerouted:

#6 Jackson Park Express – via Michigan, Cermak, King Drive, 35th Street, Cottage Grove, 47th Street, and Lake Park over the regular route.

#14 Jeffrey Express -- via Michigan, Cermak, King Drive, 35th Street, Cottage Grove, 47th Street, Lake Park, Stony Island, 67th Street, and Jeffery Blvd. over the regular route.

Please allow extra travel time. Due to drifting snow at 54th/Shore Drive, eastbound #171 U. of Chicago/Hyde Park buses are temporarily rerouted via 55th, Hyde Park, 53rd and Cornell back to 55th.

To be fair, it wasn't the depth of the snow, but the extremely windy conditions. With the drifting, it was basically impossible to keep anything -- rails or roads -- plowed for more than a few minutes.

You forgot to mention that they closed S. Lake Shore Drive for a while, too.

Also, I'd hardly say that commuter rail "collapsed". Metra is just really good about announcing problems, so you can always hear about everything that went wrong.

Thanks for the update Dustin....

Looks like it is still bad out there this morning.

The winter weather has also affected morning commuters. The Chicago Transit Authority has rerouted three bus routes because of the closure of Lake Shore Drive, according to the CTA's Web Site.

The Jackson Park Express (No. 6), Jeffery Express (No. 14) and South Shore Express (No. 26) will be rerouted via Jeffery Boulevard, 67th Street, Stony Island Avenue, 56th Street, Lake Park Avenue, 47th Street, King Drive, Cermak Road and Michigan Avenue before returning to their regular routes, the Web Site stated.

The CTA reminds all customers to allow extra travel time.

Metra is reminding customers that all trains may experience delays of five to 15 minutes because of the winter weather. The Rock Island District Train No. 600 will be delayed 30 to 40 minutes because of a medical emergency, according to Metra's Web Site.

The Milwaukee District West Line train #2201, which departed Chicago at 5:39 a.m., is currently also being delayed in the vicinity of Elmwood Park due to an automobile being stalled on the tracks, according to the Web Site. It is estimated that this train will operate approximately 25 to 30 minutes behind schedule.
